Clutter - Friend or foe? Published July/August 2002
I am just beginning to realize that there may be a lot more to the concept of "organizing one's stuff," than I had originally thought. I used to view going through and cleaning out closets, cabinets and drawers as unfulfilling work. It was something I truly dreaded. Now I'm starting to change my tune.Recently my husband took on a job that has been on our "to do" list for over ten years. It was the timely task of going through all our old video tapes and labeling them. Perhaps you can relate to our decade of haphazardly pulling out videos trying to find that "special moment on tape," while all the time boring our guests during this chaotic process. It was so frustrating. In the last few weeks I have joined in on this quest. I recently re-did my linen closet, a couple of my kitchen cabinets and a chest of drawers. While this may not sound like a huge accomplishment in the scheme of things, it has made me feel a lot better. While life outside may be hectic and cluttered, I do have the ability to somewhat control my inner parameters. I feel as if I am on a roll. I look around my home and office and see the possibilities. I am seriously contemplating tackling that enormous box of old photos sitting on one of my office shelves. Boy, if I was able to put all that in order, there is no telling what could be accomplished. By dealing with the things that clutter my surroundings, perhaps I can shorten that mental "to do" list that endlessly clutters my mind. E-mail Cyn LoPinto at editor@homefrontmagazine.com.
