Well the 2002 Olympic games have come to a close and our view of the world once again will be from afar. I appreciated the Olympics even more so this year. Viewing the compassion and support for Americans from those representing other countries, choked me up repeatedly. After the horror of September 11th, seeing foreign athletes carrying symbols of the American flag alongside flags from their individual countries, made me feel a whole lot better about things in general. It really brings home the point that people aren't all that different. We basically want the same things in life, acceptance and security.

Between the controversial judging fiascoes, disqualification of athletes and questionable drug testing results, it was undoubtedly an Olympics that will be talked about for a long time. Stories were changing by the minute. But there were also a lot of positive memories as well. None of us will forget the remarkable Shea family and everything that they had to overcome. Jill Bakken and Vonetta Flowers winning the first women's two-person bobsled gold medal and Long Island's Sarah Hughes grabbing the gold medal in figure skating (after going out on the ice to "just have fun"), are just some examples depicting the American heroes from these games. There were many such stories of inspiration and triumph. I believe it was just what our country needed after such a traumatic 2001.
