Vote for America's National Tree Published March/April 2001
The United States has the bald eagle as its national bird and the “Star Spangled Banner” as its national anthem. We have “In God We Trust” as our motto, the rose as our flower and “Stars and Stripes Forever” as our national march. But a national tree has never been designated. The National Arbor Day Foundation, a non-profit organization that plants more than eight million trees a year thoughout America, is looking to change this.
Arbor Day is celebrated each year on the last Friday in April. As part of 2001’s celebration, The National Arbor Day Foundation is hosting a process that makes it possible for people to vote for America’s National Tree. Those who wish to participate can vote by visiting the Foundation’s Web site at www.arborday.org which contains educational material on the list of tree candidates. People are invited to visit online to learn more about each tree type and to cast their vote. Voting will take place up through the midnight before National Arbor Day, April 27, 2001. They can also mail in their votes to : The National Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Avenue, Nebraska City, NE 68410. Include your name and address on a 3x5” card as well as the tree of your choice. These votes will then be added to the online ones. The deadline for mail-in votes is April 1, 2001. The winning tree will be annnounced on April 27, Arbor Day. According to the Foundation’s president, John Rosenow, “America has the grandest trees on earth - the largest, the oldest, and we think, the most beautiful. It is time for the American people to select a national tree as an enduring symbol of all of our magnificent trees, and of our natural heritage.” Return to a list of feature stories from Home Front Magazine.
