Looking for an attention-getting way to raise money for leukemia research, 11 middle-aged members of the Rylstone, England, Women’s Institute decided to strip for charity and pose for a pinup calendar. Much to their amazement, the calendar became a British media and sales phenomenon and raised $550,000.

The North American edition of the calendar ($10.95) is out now and includes the original 12 calendar pages which run from June 2000 and end May 2001. Due to the unusual timing of this calendar release, there will be additional images and grids for June 2001 through December 2001.

The calendar was inspired by Angela Baker’s husband, John, who fell ill and died from leukemia. While John did not survive to see the calendar, it was a source of joy and entertainment throughout his difficult illness. A sunflower appears in every tasteful photo, commemorating the flowers John grew in the hope that he would recover by the time they flowered.

The concept and the images struck a chord with people. Thousands of letters poured in commending the women for their achievements and for helping to alter the perception of older women. “This is not about looks or age, it’s about spirit. I like to think of it as a celebration of women in full bloom,” said Tricia Stewart (“Miss October”). “Somehow it has touched people’s hearts and their souls.”

All royalties from this calendar are split beween the Leukaemia Research Fund in the U.K. and The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in the United States.
