It is long overdue! A World War II Memorial is coming to Washington D.C. with hopes for construction to begin Veterans Day this year. This tribute will honor those who fought in the largest war of all time, as well as those who contributed on the home front. This will be the first national memorial to include the achievements of ordinary Americans.

Actor Tom Hanks is a spokesperson for The Advertising Council, Tom Hanks which is working with the World War II Memorial Fund to raise money for this project. Hanks became involved after doing the film Saving Private Ryan. Like many people, he was surprised that there was no national memorial for World War II already in existence. When he found out he could help in making this a reality, he joined the project.

The memorial’s location is in Washington’s National Mall at the Rainbow Pool site between the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument. As part of the memorial, designer Friedrich St. Florian includes a lower plaza surrounding the Rainbow Pool where people can sit. There will be a registry of names of those in the armed forces as well as Americans who helped on the home front.
