  Elderhostel fulfills some space-age dreams
Published January/February 2001

Marcus Hale-Elderhostel Who says that the dream of becoming an astronaut has to stop after childhood? Seventy-seven year old Marcus Hale certainly does not. During the week of November 5 through 10, Marcus got a taste of a fantasy that most of us can only imagine.

Out of only 35 participants from 14 states, Hale was chosen to attend the Elderhostel Astronaut Training Program in Hutchinson, Kansas at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center. This was a six-day event based on the Cosmo-sphere’s Future Astronaut Training Program designed for middle school children.

The Elderhostel participants took part in a number of training procedures similar to those actual astronauts undertake. These seniors performed stress tests inside a G-force trainer called a centrifuge. Hale and the others experienced working in a simulated mission control area as well as flying an “Advanced Flight Simulator” that was inside an actual F-101 cockpit. There were also exercises directing a lunar rover mission similar to the famous Mars Pathfinder. The Cosmosphere has its own shuttle simulator called “The Falcon,” which participants especially enjoyed. During the week, Hale and the others were able to view some Russian space artifacts, the Apollo 13 command module Odyssey and a replica of the Space Shuttle Endeavour.

Hale has attended more than 50 Elderhostel programs statewide and even some that have taken place in other countries. While discussing his Elderhostel experiences, Marcus Hale said, “I would rate this Kansas Cosmosphere at the top.”

While speaking to Hale, you can’t help but notice his enthusiasm. Even though he has been through some medical problems, he strives to attend five Elderhostel programs a year.

This last one was an extraordinary accomplishment. I am sure it is a memory he will cherish forever.

Elderhostel Inc. is a 25-year-old non-profit organization serving adults 55 years and up. They offer various classes all over the country and some great adventures. You can request a catalog on upcoming programs.
