  The naked truth
Published June 2000

A poem by Lucille Grimm
A reader from Tampa, Fla.

Golf players Do you look at yourself in the mirror? After the shower – without clothes? Does it go something like this?

I looked in the mirror and what did I see?
A pernicious prune looking back at me!
“Stand erect” – a command for perfection
VIAGRA, I’ll get – to improve my ERECT ion!
And my cleavage … where did it go?
Pulled by gravity two feet below.

Cupid-bow lips for romantic kisses…
Now it’s “Motor-mouth” – some hits and misses.
And teeth – six are really my own
For the others, I took out a loan.
I came into this world with no guarantee,
I can’t get ‘em back … that’s my destiny.

And my gas, I guess, was never refined;
Slurping and burping, the very worst kind.
And the midriff… once so firm and so proud
With a cute little button (no piercing allowed).
Now – a big pot belly. Alas ! Alack!
With a rumble seat riding on my back.

Age may be an Attitude; but old-age skin
Blotched-ready to give out or give in.
Of course, we all know that this is in VEIN
When purple spider-webs invade our domain.
Feet with “flats” that really don’t flatter;
No more spike heels. What does it matter?

So, I’ll pick up my towel and paint my face
And put on my dress of ribbon and lace.
I’ll drag my cleavage up from my knees
And wiggle my rumble seat – just to please;
Guys, try to whistle (if you have the breath)
But I won’t hear you… I’m getting so deaf!

But while I’m tearing poor ME asunder,
It’s better than being “six feet under.”
So … wake up; smell the coffee – and then
SMILE – no matter what “shape” you’re in.
Even if old clothes are on the mend…
A SMILE will cover all, my friend.
