On the road again

on the road again(NAPSA)-Many pet owners might find vacations more enjoyable if they could take their pet along. Pets are welcome at some vacation destinations, but it’s a good idea to check on pet policies before leaving home. Some places require deposits for pets and some have special exercise areas.

Sharing vacation fun with your dog or cat can be easier if you follow a few tips from the experts at KOA Kampgrounds.

  • When traveling, pet owners may need to bring a crate, a first aid kit, familiar toys, a supply of the pet’s food and treats, at least two leashes, food and water bowls, proof of license and vaccination, plus a picture in case the pet gets lost, a brush or comb, and an identification tag and updated rabies tag.
  • A first aid kit for pets should include a topical antibiotic, veterinary eye drops, gauze and wrapping tape, tweezers, and any regular medication that the pet takes.
  • Take your pet to the veterinarian before your trip so he or she is up to date with all the required shots.
  • If you are traveling to Canada or Mexico, your pet will probably need a health certificate from your vet in addition to proof of rabies vaccination.
  • If you are traveling to Lyme disease country (New England, the upper Midwest, or California) your pet may require a Lyme Disease vaccine. Flea prevention can also be a good idea.
  • When traveling in a car or RV, be sure to keep it cool and well-ventilated for your pet. Stop every two to three hours so the dog can take a walk. Offer water during the stops.
  • If your dog is not traveling in a crate, put on a doggie seatbelt.
  • Never leave your pet in a parked car, even in the shade with the window cracked open.
  • Don’t leave your pet alone all day, even if he is in a crate.                                                          www.koa.com.
