Going on a picnic is still a great summer activity. We now dress more casually but have adopted rigid attitudes toward the handling and storage of food. According to the National Food Processors Association, bring just enough food to eat without having to deal with leftovers.
Frequent hand washing is a must. If you are away from a sink, purchase antibacterial hand wipes to do the trick. Store all food in a well-iced cooler kept in the air conditioned car instead of the trunk while traveling.
Avoid packing foods containing raw eggs such as mayonaise and cream. Take-out foods, should be eaten within two hours of pick up and chilled properly. Knowing your food is safe will let you concentrate on having a good time.Return to a list of "Then and Now" features.
