Published May/June 2002 ![]() With summer just around the corner, it is the perfect time of year to remind ourselves how to enjoy this wonderful season without ruining our skin and putting our health at risk. Relaxing at the beach can still be one of our summertime rituals, if we just take some important precautions. Make sure to apply a sunscreen with a SPF of at least 15 (a higher number for fair-skinned individuals). Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going out and reapply after swimming. It is suggested to use waterproof sunscreen even if there will be no swimming, since these sunscreens have more staying power.
To prevent sunburn, especially avoid going out between the hours of 10 AM and 3 PM. IF you have to be out during these hours, wear loose-fitting clothes, a broad-brimmed hat and shoes to protect your feet and ankles. Also, don't forget to grab your UV rated sunglasses, since your eyes need protection as well. The bottom line is that you can still enjoy the summer and take part in the outdoor activities that are so much a part of the season. Just be sure to take care of yourself and your skin, so you will be around for many summers to come. Return to a list of "Then and Now" features.
