While the term "fanatic" projects the image of a person who is extreme, excessive and unreasonable, its offspring "fan" is seen as an ardent devotee or enthusiast. You may argue that some sports fans teeter somewhere between these two definitions, but you'll find little argument that as Americans, we love our sports teams. A true fan is a person who stays loyal to his/her team no matter what. While a 0-16 football season may cause great frustration and bouts of depression, it is hardly reason enough to give up.
Devotion is hard work. You have to put up with rampant criticism and negativity. But when your team does go all the way, what a payoff! You can deservedly celebrate right along with them. Your own blood, sweat and tears have earned you this privilege. Besides, anyone can wear the hat of "this year's" champs. Where's the fun in that?
