Word play Published May/June 2002
I have to admit I have an obsession. I have always enjoyed word games. I have said that I would never play games on the computer as it is a waste of time, but one day at my daughter's home, she showed me how to "Word Whomp." A 6-letter word comes up and you have to see how many words you can make out of it in a measured time frame. It was fun.I didn't access it on my computer, but the next time she visited, she said, "I'll put it on your 'My Favorites' section and all you have to do is push the button and it will tell you how to play." Wellllll, that was the beginning of my addiction. I always say I will allow myself about 1/2 hour at a time, but quite often when I do finally sign off the Internet, I hear something like, "You have spent 79 minutes online." I can never believe it. The other side effect is that I find myself looking at signs and printed material and scrambling them to make other words. My mind won't stop it. It reminds me of when I took stenography in high school. I would mentally take down everything anyone said in shorthand. I recall being in church and, instead of listening to the message of the sermon, my concentration would drift towards making sure I got all the words down in Gregg shorthand. It took me awhile to get over that. As for now, my days consist of crossword puzzles, jumbles, cryptoquotes and word whomps. I am a very busy woman. It is difficult to fit in the cooking, laundry and cleaning details. Maybe now that spring is here, I will get a life! E-mail Betty Lammers at betty@homefrontmagazine.com.
