Let me tell you about my summer vacation. I spent two weeks at the Jersey Shore - not the fun-filled days of past vacations, but a couple of days at Jersey Shore Medical Center and the rest at Shore Rehabilitation Institute. I never got to the beach. I had back surgery.

After trying everything possible to avoid surgery such as chiropractic, cortisone injections and epidoral treatments, I came to realize that I was up against that brick wall and there was no way out. Now several weeks later I am glad I did. No more constant pain and as I continue to heal, I get stronger every day.

I have knitted an afghan, read several books, and have seen every TV show and rerun offered this summer, (and they weren't that good the first time around). I am ready for some activity now.

I can drive my car, go to a supermarket, browse the local library, visit family and friends and am looking forward to resuming my water exercise classes three times a week. It is all these simple pleasures I have missed.

I have two titanium rods and six screws in my back now so I will be setting off those airport machines the next time I fly. Emptying my pockets will not do it anymore. With the strides made in medicine the last decade, it is amazing that so many parts of the body can be replaced or rebuilt and we go on with living. And when you can live without pain - life is wonderful!
